CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency)
City of Abbotsford
Material Composted: 1.3 million Chicken Mortalities (Negative tested for Virus), wood waste, chicken litter (Layer & Broiler), Effluent
No. Bags/Pods: 30 – 10’ x 200’ (green compost bags)
16 – 12 x 350’ (white silage bags)
Curing Time: 8 weeks – 12 weeks in bags, 30 days air cured (windrows), to be tested by CFIA to determine rate of compost
Points of Interest: Two different compost systems used (both in vessel).

A number of on farm cattle mortalities were composted in specific bags. Upon initial opening and turning of contents a shell of a hoof was found along with some cattle bone fragments that break up in your hands.

A Compost Turner (specific machine) was used for turning the contents once the bags were opened further breaking down the contents and aerating the mixture.

All machinery used in this compost process is mobile and able to be used in any emergency situation.
